If you’re following a vegan or gluten-free diet, restrictions are a way of life, especially when it comes to dessert. But at Petunia’s Pies & Pastries it’s the exact opposite: absolutely everything is gluten-free and vegan. “I wanted to take the guesswork out of it all,” says Lisa Clark, who opened the brick and mortar shop in March, three years after she began selling her goods at local farmer’s markets (which she continues to do—see a list of local markets and retailers here).

Lisa, who herself has a gluten allergy, clearly derives a lot of joy in setting up locals (and visitors) with sweets they can eat without guilt or distress. “People cry when they come in and find us for the first time because they haven’t had cake in 10 years,” she says.

Even if you don’t have dietary restrictions, the bakery is still worth a visit, whether you go for a gooey salted caramel cookie bar (the shop’s top-selling item), or make a trip early on a Saturday or Sunday morning for freshly fried doughnuts. With so many worthy treats to choose from, it’s tough to know where to start, so we turned to Lisa for her top 5 picks. Click through the slideshow at the top for the full list.

MIX Magazine Names Petunia’s One of Portland’s Newest Hot Spots! p2s71t58_4401MIX-Graphic2

Petunia’s Pies & Pastries

Everyone loves office heroes — those who surprise us by stocking our break rooms with fresh-baked goodies. Everyone except vegans. And those avoiding gluten. Well, downtown office workers can now please all of their co-workers by popping into Petunia’s, where display cases are filled with gluten-free and vegan cookies, tarts, scones, cobblers and sticky buns. And as the name implies, Petunia’s does pies, both whole and by the slice. Just polished off a hearty supper at Gruener? Petunia’s keeps late hours, meaning you can swing by for post-prandial, dairy-free ice cream sundaes and banana splits. You can even enjoy a nightcap there, too. Aviation Gin’s Ryan Magarian designed the specialty cocktail list using ingredients like bubbly, gin, creme de violette and chartreuse. They go down easy, and with pastel hues that match the shop’s colors, they look pretty, too.

Brunch & Bubbly: Mother’s Day @ Petunia’s!

Happy May Day Petunia’s friends!

Our flowers in the bakery reminded us today of our family May Day tradition. Every year .facebook_147015091when we were little, our mom would help weave paper baskets that we filled with flowers from our yard, and left on our neighbors’ doorsteps. Did any of you do this? With Mother’s Day just around the corner, we find ourselves filled with memories of our mom. She was the inspiration behind Petunia’s Pies & Pastries after all! To celebrate her memory, and mothers everywhere of all types, we would like to invite you to join us at the bakery this Mother’s Day, Sunday May 12th for our first Mother’s Day fête: Brunch & Bubbly!

To celebrate properly, we are having a pretty special contest! Please bring a photo and/or a note, story, memory or tribute to your mom. Whether it be your mother, grandparent, sibling, Aunt, friend, Dad or neighbor, we want to celebrate the mother figure in your life!  We will be posting your tribute in our bakery for the day. Our favorite submission will receive a $25.00 Petunia’s gift certificate!
Of course, we will be having treats exclusively for Mother’s day that are as lovely as they are delicious!

Brunch & Bubbly Specials:
Drink Specials:
Mimosa
Kir Royale
French 75

Treats:
Passionfruit French Macarons

Attendees who spend over $25.00 in the bakery will receive a gift Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Babycake. This babycake is also special for the day!

We are so pleased to share the story of how Petunia’s Pies and Pastries began in Lisa’s own tiny kitchen, and has grown into the beautiful space that we open March 1st. Please kick back and enjoy!

We here at Petunia’s Pies and Pastries are about to open our doors for the first time, and we could not be more excited! Our 1,600 square feet location at 610 SW 12th Ave  is set to open to the public March 1st! We’ve been hard at work every day getting the bakery ready do do what we love, bring joy to our customers! So much thought and care has gone into every choice we have made in this process, and we hope you’ll see the proof in the pudding. Or, the cowgirl cookie, in this case. Bakery Window

Our location is a perfect choice. We just love the area. The hill, the character, the somewhat “undiscovered” idea of it here. We love the style of the older buildings, and the old church across the street reminds us of being in Europe, and it’s so peaceful to look at! We think this area is going to develop greatly in the next couple of years, and just had to be a part of the growth here.

Petunia’s Pies and Pastries’ first brick and mortar location will function both as our production kitchen and a retail storefront and bakery. We will serve an expansive selection of our pastries, signature items, seasonal specialties, and daily specials. These could be anything from waffle sandwiches to ice cream sundaes and bruleed banana splits! On the weekends we will serve up fresh batches of our famous doughnuts and sticky buns. We will have a small savory menu with sandwiches, salads and delicious healthy unique little bites. We plan to serve a selection of nice wines (and bubbly, of course), locally made gluten free beer and signature cocktails that can be paired deliciously with our desserts! Stumptown coffee and espresso will be proudly served. Everything will, naturally, be gluten free & vegan. Many other items offered will be soy free, refined sugar free, nut free, etc.

Owner Lisa Clark proudly presenting the bakery while under construction.

The whole feel of the place will be quintessential Petunia’s. Retro, fun, colorful yet simple, clean, classy and comforting. We have created a space that makes people feel happy, warm and full of life. A place where they can relax and enjoy Portland’s best dessert and treats, and feed a part of their soul. Dessert speaks to people. Food in general does, but dessert makes you feel special, makes your eyes light up, makes you smile, makes your heart race a bit, makes you remember being a kid and eating some cookies your mom made warm from the oven. That is what we will bring to customers. More than dessert, a feeling. That is what we love to do.photo

Sit back and enjoy the video below and watch how our bakery has progressed from bare to beautiful!

XOXO
